Day 4 of the Beer Advent Calendar. Today's beer is Garrison Brewery's Martello Stout. Martello Stout was recently discontinued by the MLCC here in Manitoba, so when a product is discontinued, it's discounted until the last remaining stock is depleted, to make room for other beers. It's a shame that the beer was discontinued as Garrison is one of THE best breweries in Canada, in fact - they produce the true Nova Scotian IPA.
Appearance: Pours thick black, decent amount of a tanned light brown head, creamy, your standard stout.
Aroma: Quite sweet, roasted malts, which gives it a bit of a coffee aroma, dark chocolate, and a bit of bitterness that was seen in La Voie Maltée's Imperial Stout the other day.
Taste: Not as wham-bam as I'd expect (coming from aroma), it's like a mocha - notes of coffee starts out, followed by a hot chocolate-like sweetness. Bit of a bitterness coming from the roastiness. A bit watery feeling to the palate, not as creamy as some stouts. For 4.8% ABV, it does have a great deal of flavour though.
Overall Thoughts: A solid stout, compareable in ways to Half Pints' Stir Stick and even to some lighter Imperial Stouts (ie Ft Garry Kona) as it has a bit of the bitterness that we saw in La Voie Maltée's Imperial Stout the other day. Disappointed to see this discontinued, but I have a few other bottles saved so I'll live.. for now!
Was chilling at Vanessa's place last night, as she passed out, moi and Keith savoured some Half Pints Humulus Ludicrous. I already reviewed this year's batch so check out the review here
