Review: Surly Rocket Surgery Hazy Ale

Surly Brewing's Rocket Surgery Hazy Ale. This is currently an exclusive over at the Quality Beer Store but it appears that this beer is coming soon to Manitoba Liquor Marts but who knows when.

From the website: This juicy, hazy ale is brimming with Citra and Simcoe hops for a fruit-forward blast of hop flavor. Drink it. You’ll like it. It’s not rocket surgery, it’s Rocket Surgery. 5.5% ABV

Appearance: Orange-ish body with a good amount of haziness to it, pretty much as expected for a Hazy Pale Ale. Light amount of carbonation in the body but the head has a moderate off-white head with a good amount of lacing once it goes down.

Aroma: This turned out sweeter than expected, which made me want to try this beer even more. All I'm really getting is a fruity/citrus presence of pineapple and lemon - reminiscent of the ol' Five Alive soda from the 90s.

Taste: I get the flavour of melon right from the very first sip - it's sweet but not too sweet, but certainly fruity all around. I also get a bit of pineapple, lemon, orange peel popping up as well. I can't forget to mention that there's a bit of a floral hop presence that's not overpowering the fruitiness of the.. hops. Aftertaste is a bit of a bitterness from the yeast used for this beer, a bit strong but diminishes gradually.

Overall Thoughts: Solid Hazy Ale by the peeps over at Surly. I'll definitely be picking it up once it hits the local MLCC locations (hopefully), as long as they aren't restricted to Winnipeg locations, so time will tell. Sweet, tropical, juice forward and a tad leafy.. so I'll definitely sample this again.
