Review: Clausthaler Original Non-Alcoholic Beer

I've never heard of Clausthaler Original Non-Alcoholic Beer, but I saw it at my local Safeway for $1.99 for a 500mL can so I felt that I needed to try the beer. With terms like "superior taste" and "taste full life", I'm surprised there's no "Premium Quality" mentioned anywhere on the can.

From Clausthaler's website: "Ever since it put non-alcoholic beer on the map in 1979, Clausthaler has been the gold standard of the segment. With its own, specialized brewing technique, the pioneer still creates its signature non-alcoholic lager, Clausthaler Classic, in strict accordance with the German purity law. Its genuine real beer taste is well-balanced, fresh, and easy to drink, with a creamy feel on the palate and a pleasing golden color to match."

Appearance: Pours a crisp golden straw body with good amount of clarity, a lot of micro-carbonation inside the body, and a thick snow white head on top. I left the head to diminish a bit but it barely goes anywhere, except painting the side of the glass in bubbles.

Aroma: This honestly smells like when you visit a brewery on brew day, all the machinery are at work and it has an overly sweet wet barley aroma with a farm-like presence to it, it's completely reminiscent of that. There's also a bit of an Earl Grey tea vibe to it as well.

Taste: Way too light for mouthfeel is the first thing I get, it doesn't really do much to the tongue at all. The beer has notes of raw wet barley porridge, a bit of Earl Grey tea to it, some grassy hop notes, and a hint of lemon. There's a hefty raw wet barley taste I'm getting for aftertaste.. definitely not the most pleasant taste.

Overall Thoughts: Well, they definitely show off the barley in this beer to the point that it tastes like how a brewery smells during a fresh brewing. Do I like it? Not really, I was hoping I would get past the brewery smell taste and Earl Grey but that's all I really got. This definitely has more of a punch to it compared to many non-alcoholic beers out there but for those who are wanting a crisp light lager, the malt profile will be too grainy and sweet for the average beer drinker. At $1.99 per 500mL can, it's a decent value though.

Ingredients: Water, Barley Malt, Hop Extract (!!!!!), Fermentation Carbon Dioxide.

130 Calories per 500mL serving. 0.0% ABV

I have to agree with Celtical. Tried 10+ different non alcoholic beers and this one is the best so far.
