I love when new beer comes to my local Liquormart, that means time for new reviews!
This week, Tree Brewing's Hop Head Double IPA made its appearance here. As a person who absolutely loves IPAs, as well as DIPAs, I was giddy with joy!
The Hop Head Double IPA has an ABV of 8.4% and costs just under $6 for a 650mL bottle (with excellent painted label as always).
The Hop Head DIPA is loaded with five different kinds of varieties, so this will be enjoyed. Possibly not as loved as Half Pints' Humulus Ludicrous, but I'll enjoy it either way!
Appearance: Pours a very thick caramel-amber brown colour. Almost like a weird dirty farm water look to it, but much more appetizing ;) Minimal foam, a bit of a beige creaminess.
Aroma: Have I told you that I love hops? This beer is making my mouth salivate. It's a nice sweet hoppy beer. Similar to the usual great IPAs that we all love. Has a caramel meets lemon/citrusy zest. Decent amount of bitterness from said hops, I need to drink this already!
Taste: Bitterness overtakes sweetness 10:1. I love a good balance of bitter:sweetness. However, in this case, the bitterness of the hops is front and centre. That said, I do enjoy it. There's a hint of citrusy zest that hits your tongue for a brief milisecond before the bitterness takes over. I love the amount of hops used in this though. If you love love love hops, you will enjoy this.
Overall Thoughts: If you want a hop sandwich, this is a great beer for you. That said, this is overly hoppy for some. If you're looking for a beer with a great balance of LOTS of hops and great sweetness/citrus, this isn't the beer you're looking for. I like the beer, but the hops will be stuck to my tongue until tomorrow afternoon. Incredibly hoppy. I do enjoy that there's a sweetness that hits the tongue as soon as the liquid touches the tongue, but it doesn't stay for long. LOVE hops? Drink it! Love sweetness/easy drinkability? You won't love this.
How does this compare to Half Pints' Humulus Ludicrous? Half Pints' is sweeter, overall.
But.. 5 kinds of hops? How can you go wrong!?
