I haven’t been reviewing many non-alcoholic beers lately - I’m trying to keep up with all the NA beers/products out there but I’m mentally beyond exhausted, so my writing about beer and non-alcoholic beer/products is pretty much non existent at the moment, though I do get small bursts of excitement that pushes me to keep on writing. I’ve probably said this more than once by now, but I’d like to thank Section 6 Brewing out of Brandon, Manitoba for pushing me to try out all the non-alcoholic beers of all styles - they’ve been my biggest influence on writing about NA beers, and any time they’re looking to bring in a new non-alcoholic product, they will ask for my input first - I really appreciate it, as there’s times of the year when I just need to get out and socialize without alcohol for personal reasons - so it’s nice to have an options that’s not “we have water or soda” as the only options.. I just really like the taste of beer.
Today’s sampling is Sleeman Breweries' Zero+ Lager with Electrolytes. I reviewed Sleeman’s Point Five Citrus Lager a few years back during COVID, back when I was quarantining at my parents farm - Point Five was decent but it just wasn’t popular.. though I had lots of people searching for reviews of the beer.
I feel like that Sleeman Zero+ with Electrolytes is definitely going to be the Canadian-branded alternative to Corona Cero with Vitamin D, because I haven’t seen any other beers with supplemented vitamins. Hey - the NA market is only going to grow, so I don’t blame them.
From the website: Sleeman Zero+ is a truly alcohol-free golden lager made with added electrolytes. At 0.0% ABV, Sleeman Zero+ has an exceptionally refreshing and easy-drinking pure beer taste and only 60 calories per serving. 0.0% ABV. 60 Calories.
Ingredients: Dealcoholized beer, Potassium chloride, Natural flavours
Appearance: Incredibly clear and bright, golden lager - one of the clean and clearest lagers I’ve had in a while. A tad bit of carbonation at the beginning but it pretty much has a bubble here or two. The head is the thickest I've seen from any Sleeman-based lager in a long time it’s thick, foamy, big bubbles here and there - has an off-white presence to it, and once it goes down.. it leaves behind a lacing on the glass. The overly clear and light carbonation of the beer makes this look like apple juice with foam on top.
Aroma: Lots of sweet notes attributed to the barley - notes of honey, a tad bit of nuttiness, notes of straw/hay. This smells like a typical lager to me, nothing really giving off “this is a non-alcoholic beer” vibe at all.
Taste: Sweet with a honey-like presence to it, notes of straw, a bit of grassiness, and a slight yeastiness to it, oh and a tad bit of saltiness to it at the very end.
Overall Thoughts: Very clean and crisp lager that’s pretty much in line with a typical Sleeman Lager/Original Draught - very crushable, but I did find it ended up being a bit heavy for my stomach for a few minutes. This is a de-alcoholized beer so it was a fully brewed Sleeman beer with the alcohol stripped out with various electrolytes added to it. The process of brewing a NA beer/de-alcoholized NA beer is very expensive so serious props to every brewery that does it. One thing I did notice is that there’s a warning label on here to not drink more than 3 servings per day and not to drink this with other supplemental foods, as this one has 250mg of added Potassium.
