Dark Mild is a light, smooth & malty English Dark Ale (4%) featuring notes of coffee and the light sweetness of fresh biscuits.
Appearance: Rich, deep dark brown ale with a bit of a cherry cola hue to it. The head has a frothy beige head right from the beginning that eventually goes down to be a just a thimble's worth of foam on top after a minute or so.
Aroma: Roasted malt profile, notes of coffee, dark chocolate, brown sugar, hint of brown bread. It's also slightly nutty but all in all, a very welcoming beer so far.
Taste: The first thing I get is a roasted malt profile that gives me notes of black coffee, a hint of peat for earthiness, followed by a faint hint of nutmeg, brown bread and an ever so faint sweetness of caramel. No noticeable chocolate this time around. Pretty darn smooth.
Overall Thoughts: Definitely fits in part of Kilter's "Vintage" series of beer - I don't know how they can do so many styles of beers that keep them on the bleeding edge of technology but still have time to pay tribute to beer styles of yesteryear - that's a lot of work. This is a really good Dark Mild and outside Manitoba and I guess the UK, Dark Milds were never a big trend, which is a shame because they're absolutely great!
