Today’s sampling comes from Pilot Mound, MB’s Wooden Gate Cider. I don’t typically review cider but I 100% know StĆ©ph from Podcrastination is laughing at me reviewing cider after me telling him for years that I’ll never like cider in my entire life. Wellllllllllll, Clint & Co over at Wooden Gate are incredibly confident that I’ll enjoy their product.. and they’re right.. I’ve enjoyed their product! Today’s sampling: Buck ’N’ Fuggles Hops & Buckwheat Honey Cider - it’s pretty much self-explanatory.
The notes on the bottle state that the aromas will have citrus, vanilla & honey, while the tasting notes will be semi sweet, buckwheat honey and apple with a slight hop finish. 5.5% ABV
Appearance: The cider pours a mostly-clear apple juice kind of yellowish-dark golden colour with a faint cloudiness to it. There’s a very faint amount of micro-carbonation in the body with a couple bubbles here and there for the head. Lastly, there’s a bit of sediment at the bottom of the cider.
Aroma: The buckwheat honey aroma is the most dominating thing I’m getting - it’s decently sweet, a bit floral, a tad tart and has a decent apple sweetness to it. The hops are coming out with the honey, giving off that floral presence I just mentioned.
Taste: Fairly tart to start things off, coming off the apples. There’s a sweet honey presence to it that gives off almost a mead-like presence to it. There’s a good amount of floral notes to it that are attributed to the buckwheat honey, but as well the Fuggles hops used in the cider. Decently crisp, tart yet moderately smooth for me. The aftertaste is a hint of buckwheat, a tad floral hop presence, and a slight apple tartness at the end.
Overall Thoughts: I’ll never be an expert of cider but it’s solid - it’s sweet, has a crisp apple presence to it, lots of honey, a tad floral and slight hint of hoppiness that compliments the fruit and honey. For the mead and cider lovers - they’ll for sure enjoy this one.
