Review: Nokomis Zig Zag Wanderer Brett Saison

Nokomis Zig Zag Wanderer Brett SaisonIt's been a while since I've reviewed anything by Nokomis Craft Ales out of Nokomis, SK - their beer has been phenominal since the first time I ever tried their beer a bit over a decade ago. Today's sampling is their Zig Zag Wanderer Brett Saison. This Saison is fermented with a rustic Belgian Saison yeast and aged in Cognac foeders with a fruity & funky strain of Brettanomyces. 6.5% ABV

Appearance: Fairly clear with a deep golden, almost apple juice-like body to it. There's a light amount of head as it's being poured but it diminishes rather immediately. There's a couple bubbles here and there. A bit of carbonation in the beer itself.

Aroma: I forgot for a moment that this has Brett in it - wow, it's full on funky! It's very tart, almost like a white wine meets apple juice kind of aroma to me. There's a slight bit of woodiness to it, bubble gum and a hint of straw.

Taste: The tartness makes my face cringe, but in a good way. It's very, very dry with a white wine and apple juice kind of complexity to it. There's a definite Belgian yeast zestiness to it that gives off a bit of citrus as well as bubble gum to it. The aftertaste is a bit reminiscent of a dry cider. Decently sweet but more tart than anything else. Not noticing much or any woody notes to it.

Overall Thoughts: This induces major face puckering. It's kind of sweet but yeah, very tart. Actually, this is pretty easy to drink when you get past the dominating tartness.
