Review: Nonsuch Framboise (Lambic Sour)

Nonsuch Framboise Sour Today's sampling is Framboise by Brasserie Nonsuch out of Winnipeg. I recently picked this bottle up on a rare visit to Winnipeg. I couldn't find any notes about the beer but it's pretty much a Raspberry Lambic Sour with 5.3% ABV. It's a rarity to get a cork & caged bottle of beer in this day and age, so it feels like a real treat when it does happen.

Appearance: Very deep and vibrant red raspberry juice, almost reminded me of a Rosé at first but it's pretty much deep red. Quite clear and there's a minimal amount of head on top - bright white.

Aroma: Quite tart and has a bit of a red wine kind of aroma to it. Mildly oaky, decently sweet, notes of raspberry juice, and a hint of apple juice at the end.

Taste: Very tart. In my first sip I had a bit of a typical face puckering not expecting it to be as tart/sour as it is. It kind of has a bit of a sourness that I see a lot in Brett-forward beers but I'm assuming there's none of it in this beer. Notes of raspberry juice, and also a bit of apple juice at the end again.

Overall Thoughts: I was going to say that this was reminiscent of their classic Raspberry Sour but it's quite different. This one is more tart and full on fruit, almost has a fruit wine vibe to me, while the classic Sour has a definite grain-forward flavour to it. This would pair well with a nice Christmas meal for those who are looking for a perfect bottle of beer as an alternative to wine.
