When people think of Mexican beer, they mostly think about the classic crisp, smooth Cerveza-style lager but there's a lot more to the Mexican beer scene - there's a decent amount of craft beer if you look hard enough and even beers that one wouldn't think would be common to see there like IPAs and Porters.Today's sampling is Ticús Porter by Cerveceria de Colima. I've sampled a few of their beers in the past and they were decent, nothing over the top but very approachable and welcoming to beer geeks wanting something a bit different.
Translated from their website: Our porter is complex yet light, with a deep, roasted coffee bean color that contrasts with its creamy head. You'll perceive notes of roasted malts, coffee, and sweet chocolate. 100% enjoyable for cold days and warm climates too, and easy to drink. 4.6% ABV
Appearance: Deep black colour with a moderate amount of burnt caramel brown head on top. The head diminishes pretty quickly as you could probably tell from the photo but there's still a collection of bubbles on top.
Aroma: Fairly faint for a Porter. There's a bit of camel for sweetness, a tad roasty to give off a slight coffee presence, hint of chocolate at the end. The best before date was two weeks ago but this so far should still be good.
Taste: The flavour is a lot more aggressive than the aroma ever was. There's a rich roastiness from the malt to give it a combination of coffee and peat, a sweetness of caramel and chocolate, and an ever so slight hint of pear at the end. Oh, there's also a tad bit of smokiness to it that I'm getting once in a while, especially when it warms up, but doesn't really pop out when it's cold from the fridge.
Overall Thoughts: Would I drink this on a beach in 30C weather? Probably not but I'd for sure love this in the evening or with a meal. Solid Porter.
