Review: 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek Intens Rood No 78 2020/2021

3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek Intens Rood No 78 2020/2021

I wasn't planning on reviewing this for quite a while but I saw this bottle calling my name in the fridge, so here we are!

Today's sampling is 3 Fonteinen's Oude Kriek Intens Rood (No 78 - 20/21), bottled on September 21, 2021. So, this beer was bottled exactly five years ago today (though I reviewed this days earlier). I picked this up at the Quality Inn Craft Beer Store off Pembina in Winnipeg a number of years ago and just didn't happen to ever review it, and this is a kind of beer that will age gracefully in a beer hoard.. unlike an IPA, which I've aged too many of at this point.

From the bottle: This Intens Rood underwent a maceration period for over four months on two year-old lambikken. We added some more jonge lambic just before bottling, bringing the weighted average age at almost 20 months upon bottling. The final fruit ratio is 432 grams of sour cherries per litre of Kriek. 6.8% ABV

Appearance: It has a deep reddish-purple body to it that's not quite blackberry in colour but maybe Saskatoon in colour. There's a light amount of carbonation but seeing that this is five years old, there's really not much there. The head starts off with an off-white carbonation on top but diminishes pretty quicly to leave behind a very fine amount of nano-carbonation on top of the beer.

Aroma: Very tart cherry presence, a bit of vinegar, a tad bit of barnyard funk, raspberry and a scent that reminds me slightly of a Saskatoon berry.

Taste: This is very tart, not something I'd typically review.. but here we are! There's quite a sour cherry presence at the beginning, it's not really sweet in any way, notes of vinegar, a bit of a barnyard funk that reminds me of a Bretty-forward beer, raspberries, and a hint of Saskatoon.

Overall Thoughts: Not my kind of beer, but I'm glad I sampled this - this is something I absolutely could enjoy a whole bottle of once every year or two if I was sampling it myself.. more often with friends. This is a wine lover's kind of beer 100%.
