Today's sampling is Black Wheat Brewing's Stout. It's still kind of winter here in Manitoba so there's still time to drink Stouts until the snow actually is gone. (When I'm finally posting this review, it's finally spring.. but it was still snowing just days ago!!! - Bienvenue au Manitoba.. right?)Black Wheat Stout is described as velvety, rich, and full of toffee + dark chocolate aromas. Smooth body, gentle toast, and a touch of malty sweetness to finish. 5.5% ABV - 25 IBU
Appearance: Well, do I have to really describe a stout? It's pitch black bodied with a bit of a burnt caramel head on top. The head diminishes after a couple moments of sampling, leaving behind a sprinkling of foam to give it a nice layered lacing to it.
Aroma: Rich roasty malt that gives it a roasted, dark coffee aroma to it, a bit of a caramelly sweetness - decent sweetness.
Taste: Very much a roasted stout so you get a combination of black coffee, peat, a tad bit of tobacco, and a slight smokiness to it at the end. There's a light to moderate sweetness to it, which is a sweet caramel presence to it, or a coffee without cream but with some sugar to it.
Overall Thoughts: Decent stout, very much a roasty stout, quite bitter and coffee forward.. but in the winter in Brandon, Manitoba - this is something I would prefer every time over an IPA or lager.
