This is another beer I had to buy all the way in Regina at Sobey's Liquor, but it was a must - Brasserie Dunham is on my "top breweries" list - I've always enjoyed their beer, their taproom is super cozy and their old Foudres Unis beer festival was a fun time where I made some great friends.Today's sampling is Opora, a Wild Ale that is fermented in neutral barrels with a native yeast that's captured on grapes and finished in white wine barrels. 6.4% ABV
Appearance: A tad cloudy but kind of clear at the same time. Has a deep golden colour that gives off an apple juice kind of vibe to it. Believe it or not, there was an alright amount of white head on top when I poured it but it fizzed away completely after 30 seconds. Looks flat bout there's a bit of carbonation still going on in the body of the beer itself.
Aroma: Moderately tart with a bit of a white wine aroma to it, a hint of honey sweetness, a tad bit of spice (like peppercorn) to it, a bit of crab apple tartness as well. No funkiness that I can tell so far, pretty straight forward.
Taste: Tart and definitely has some white wine notes to it. Decently dry as well as nicely sweet with a bit of a honey/apple juice presence going on here. For as tart as it is, it's very easy to drink. A tad floral, a hint of oak but faint compared to most barrel-finished beers I've had. The aftertaste is a light apple juice flavour at the end.
Overall Thoughts: Not typically something I'd really enjoy in this day and age but I like it! Sweet, good amount of tartiness to it and the appearance was misleading me, which is always a good thing to see.
