Today's sampling is Aha! Moment West Coast Rye IPA by Revelation Ale Works out of Hallock, Minnesota. 7% ABV
From their Instagram page: Crisp, dry, and bitter…this West Coast IPA was fermented with lager yeast and hopped with Simcoe, Cascade, and Hallertau Tradition. Oh, and we added a little rye from Far North Spirits to round it out with a bit of spice!
It’s not just a beer; it’s a revelation.
Cheers to the moments that make you go “aha!”
Appearance: Lots of foam the second the can is opened. The beer pours with a tad bit of clarity but becomes pretty much opaque as the final bits of the beer are poured into the glass. There's a heavy amount of off-beige head on top that diminishes a bit but rather slowly. There's a very thick amount of lacing on the glass as the beer is being sampled.
Aroma: When I got my first whiff all I thought was "another West Coast IPA" without reading what kind of style the beer is. The beer is decently bitter with a lot of pine, a bit of woodiness, grapefruit. THEN the rye grain comes out to give it a bit of a pepperiness to it at the end. It's pretty straightforward and pretty much your typical West Coaster but with a spice from the rye to give it a slight kick to it.
Taste: Mildly bitter IPA with a mild pine taste to it, a leafiness that I can't describe, grapefruit, lemon, an Earl Grey tea-like herbal presence and a mild pepperiness at the end. The rye doesn't do much this time around.. it's a bit more bitter than most West Coasts I've had lately. I'd like it to be a tad bit tropical but I'm happy it's not a New England kind of hazy for once.
Overall Thoughts: See tasting notes. Not my favourite Rye IPA but liking the more leafy/piney/woody notes in this beer.
