A Revisit: Molson Export Ale (2025)

Molson Export>One of my most read articles I've ever written was a comparison review of Labatt 50 (Cinquant) to Molson Export, a battle of the Quebec hipster/comfort/grandpa beers. I was on team Cinquant for a long time but it's impossible to find in Western Canada and I've had it multiple times recently in Ottawa and Montreal but well, that's a story for another time. I made a visit to the Quality Inn Beer Store in Winnipeg a while back and they had Molson Export in cans, something I hadn't seen since pre-COVID. It's been a number of years since I've sampled this Quebec gold, so let's do a revisit of the beer.

Appearance: Very clear with a bright golden body that has a hint of a caramel hue to it. The head is thick with a snow white colour to it, frothy and diminishes within a moment or two. Good amount of carbonation in the body.

Aroma: Decently sweet with a bit of caramel to it, grassy hops, and a slight hint of corn to it. It's very straight forward and not aggressive in any way.

Taste: Quite sweet for a mass produced Ale - it has a sweet caramel presence to it, a bit of corn syrup, a bit of grassiness and a slight aftertaste of straw at the end. Not overly complex.

Overall Thoughts: If I had to go to a chain pub/restaurant and there were no craft options, I wouldn't say no to this beer. It's sweet but pretty dry, smooth and easy to drink. This is the kind of beer that every time I open a can or have it on tap it reminds me of Soirée du Hockey from the 90s, very much a hockey-friendly beer. This is also the same beer that was the first airport beer I ever had in 2013 at a whopping $11 for a pint in Montreal as I was waiting for my connecting flight to Quebec City. Would I buy a case of this again? 100%.
