Review: Sookrams Brewing x Tot Wheels Metropolis German Pilsner

Sookrams x Tot Wheels Metropolis German PilsnerI met up with my buddy Darren while I had a brief stopover in Winnipeg a few weeks ago after a well needed vacation. Some of you will remember Darren as the owner of Winnipeg Brew Werks, which had a popular German-style Pilsner called "Pils" that actually became the most popular craft beer review I've ever written. I still remembering when he told me that his flagship beer was going to be a German-style Pilsner, I thought that was a strange idea but he knew what I didn't - the market was going to see a shift towards the demand for craft lagers and pilsners in the near future. He was right and within a couple years just about every brewery had a pilsner or lager to offer to the masses, even the breweries that made fun of the styles of beer, but hey.. I did as well and I'm eating crow still!

We made a few stops including a stop at Shorty's Pizza to get him to try my favourite sandwich in the city - their Italian Beef Dip, which was a winner in his eyes!

We ended off the evening a visit with Sookrams' taproom, which is always a great time as they always have a wide variety of styles to try at any given time. At that point they just launched their annual release of Metropolis German Pilsner, a collaboration with Tot Wheels for the annual Le Burger Week, which has already ended by the time you read this (if you read this at all).

From the description: Designed to be paired with a good burger, Metropolis is a traditional German style pilsner. Brewed with pilsner malt, the Saphir and Hallertau Mittelfrüh hops give a slight floral and spice aroma to this easy drinking pilsner. 5.0% ABV

Appearance:
Pours a rich golden-straw body with a light amount of cloudiness to it. The head is thick, frothy, snow white in colour and is anticipating for my initial sip!

Aroma: I have a bit of a cold right now so I might be missing out on something.. Deep lemon citrus notes right from the beginning, a bit of a graininess to it, a sweetness reminiscent of honey and a grassy hop finish at the end, slightly floral.

Taste: The beer is a tad grainy but not overpowering, has a nice citrus presence of lemon, a bit of a honey-like sweetness. There's a bit of a fresh dough presence I get for an aftertaste, a slight sharp bitterness of the hops that gives off a very slight bitterness but also a grassy/floral presence as well. Definitely slightly more aggressive than your father's favourite pilsner from the 80s, but very, very good.

Overall Thoughts: I just gave it away. This actually brought me back memories of a Trou du Diable tap takeover at Montreal's Vices & Versa craft beer bar. I discovered then and there that German Pilsners were a misunderstood, underrated style of beer that deserved much more attention thanks to Trou du Diable's La Germaine. I'll be buying more of this once I run out - Metropolis is probably one of the best Pilsners we can get in Manitoba at the moment.
