Review: Obsolete The Mashie Light Lager

Obsolete The Mashie Light LagerI've said it before but the best place to get beer in rural Western Manitoba is at the Home Hardware in Onanole, right outside of Riding Mountain National Park. Each time I visit they have beers that I can't even get at my local Liquor Marts in Brandon, and has a much more diverse beer selection than any beer vendor in the region.

Today's sampling is The Mashie Light Lager by Dauphin's Obsolete Brewing

From the can: The Mashie - The unofficial beer of golf in Manitoba
Named after the classic Mashie iron, the Mashie is a crisp, refreshing beer crafted for the fairways. Light and easy-drinking, this brew is perfect for your round - whether you're finding the fairway or mashing through the rough, crafted in collaboration with KNG Golf, Manitoba's premier golf and apparel brand. The mashie is built for golfers who play hard and drink easy, and as the boys from KNG Golf say, "no fluffing in the rough". Next time you're on the links, ask for a Mashie. Light, crisp, made for the links. 4.0% ABV

Appearance: Your classic clear North American-style lager. It has a light golden-straw body to it, a very thick amount of bright white foam on top, and a light amount of carbonation in the body.

Aroma: The aroma is quite sharp right from the beginning. Lots of notes of saltine crackers to start things off, honey, and lastly an abundance of straw, a tad sour at the end. A bit more aggressive than most light lagers I've had in recent memory.

Taste: Good amount of sweetness in here - notes of honey. Aggressive on the grain to the point I'm getting memories of childhood where I'd eat grain straight out of the grain bin. There's also notes of straw, a faint apple sweetness to it, and a grassy hop presence at the end.

Overall thoughts: A bit too aggressive in flavour for me but it's very easy to drink so I could definitely see golfers who want something with more personality than the typical macro lite beers would certainly drink this up!
