Review: Dominion City Two Flags IPA

Dominion City Two Flags IPAToday's sampling is a beer that I haven't had in over eight years - Two Flags IPA by Dominion City Brewing in Ottawa. My good buddy Ryan sent this to me so this review is for him. I had a nice road trip to Ottawa back in 2017 with HopCitizen where we made sure to visit a lot of great places in the Ottawa region. Due to our schedule we only had a few minutes to visit Dominion City but I made sure to buy some beer and swag to take home. One of the beers I took with me was Two Flags, which I described at the time as a bitter IPA that has a sweetness that was reminiscent of a waffle cone and a lot of pine aroma. Will it be the same today?

Two Flags IPA: “Assertively hoppy.” Two Flags is an assertively hoppy, deliberately well-balanced and highly drinkable IPA. Brewed using Cascade and Chinook from a family-owned Québec farm alongside Oregon-grown Mosaic®, this beer pours a clear pale gold with lasting, lacy foam. 7.0% ABV

Appearance: This is a purty lookin' IPA. Two Flags has a deep golden-honey hue to it with a good amount of cloudiness to it, the body has a good amount of carbonation, while the head is thick, snow white and very frothy. Eventually the head diminishes a tad, leaving behind a good layered lacing on the glass.

Aroma: Mildly floral and bitter hops with a moderate pine-forward presence to them, a hint of grapefruit which gives off a peppery spice to it, a wheaty graininess to it, slightly sweet caramel notes, and lastly a bit of a nuttiness to it.

Taste: The first thing I get is that the beer is a bit dry than usual. There's notes of pine, a bit of a nuttiness to it, caramel, wheat (which gives off a bit of a citrus/sweetness), and a slight hint of breakfast cereal, and a slight grapefruit presence as well.

Overall Thoughts: More of an oldschool kind of IPA, good amount of bitterness to it but the wheat gives it a bit of a citrusy vibe that's not the NEIPA kind of citrus. Pretty easy to drink for me. Merci R¥an
