Review: Bohemia Weizen Cerveza de Trigo

Bohemia Weizen Cerveza de TrigoWhenever I go to Mexico I typically just drink the beer that the resort is providing me, so either Modelo, Corona, or Sol. Sometimes you just want to try something different so I went for a walk to the Chedraui superstore and picked up some snacks and hotel room beers. It was much more expensive than I expected, after converting the exchange rate some of the snacks and beer were more expensive than back in Canada!

Well, I did enjoy myself and brought home a few beers to try. Today's sampling is Bohemia Weizen by Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma (Heineken Mexico). Bohemia Weizen is a Kristallweizen-style ale at 5.7% ABV

Appearance: Initially, the beer pours clear and golden, looking like any typical cerveza you'd get while in Mexico. Once I pour the last bit of the beer into the glass it gets a slight cloudiness to it. There's a bit of carbonation in the body, and the head has a light amount of white head on top that diminishes pretty much immediately.

Aroma: Lots of sweetness to it with a familiar aroma of banana and coriander that's reminding me of the classic wheat ales from Europe we all love. There's a bit of a sharp aroma to it, notes of wheat, straw, and finally a bit of perfume as well.

Taste: A crisp wheat ale with a good amount of banana and coriander presence to it, sweetness of honey, notes of straw and a wheat graininess to it. It's very smooth to the palate. Not really much of an aftertaste, a tad bit of straw, perhaps.

Overall Thoughts: This is a really good beer, something with a bit more personality than the typical cervezas we all know and love now days. I certainly enjoyed this in the 30C heat on my balcony. Hopefully I'll get to see more of this beer one of these days but I'm broke, so that probably won't happen.
