Review: Mike's Halfer Lemonade + Lager made with Busch Light

Mike's Halfer Lemonade + Busch LightThis will probably be one of the few AB InBev/Labatt reviews you'll see here now days (aside from non-alcoholic) - I want to focus more on locally owned Canadian breweries and beverage makers as long as I keep this website alive.

I have a soft spot for Mike's Hard Lemonade, I still remember enjoying it as a teen a very long time ago - I HATED beer so this was a no brainer on a hot summer day in Western Manitoba. They've recently come out with a new product called Mike's Halfer Lemonade + Lager made with Busch Light. I assume that this is AB InBev/Labatt's answer to the popularity of Shandys every summer. All I have to say though is.. why Busch Light? Why couldn't it have been say Bud Light or Corona? Well, looking back to many summers of living on the farm - Busch Light was a the choice for many people to use to mix with other beverages, but predominately Clamato and not so much lemonade. This product is only available in the Prairie provinces and Ontario. 4.0% ABV

Appearance: Well, it looks like a bit of a watered down Mike's Hard Lemonade - cloudy, faintly lemon yellow and a lot of carbonation. There's a good amount of white foam on top at the beginning but it diminishes pretty much immediately. The drink itself has a good amount of carbonation but of course not quite as fizzy as a seltzer.

Aroma: Cheap beer and lemon. Well, there's no such thing as cheap beer in Canada.. but I get a bit of a beer sweetness, tad bit of corn syrup, lemon. It is what it is.

Taste: I first get the Mike's lemonade taste and then the Busch Light - the Busch Light gives off a bit of a gritty barley taste to it, slightly nutty, hint of corn, and a slight bite of vodka at the very end.

Overall Thoughts: Would it be cheaper to get your fave cheap lager of choice and mix some lemonade in it? Sure, but this is mixing two boozy products into one. I'm sure you'll like it but I don't think I'll get it again - it's not horrible or anything but just not something I'd usually get. If you hate the taste of "beer" but want to say you're kind of drinking a beer? This could be for you.
