Review: Brat Cat Lucky Lemonade Blackberry Lemonade Session Mead

Brat Cat Blackberry Lucky Lemonade Blackberry MeadI'm very much not an expert on meads but I've enjoyed a couple over the past decade or so.. who else wouldn't love fermented boozy honey?! Okay, okay, I know! It was theoretical. Anywho....

I reviewed Brat Cat's Raspspspberry Raspberry Session Mead a number of months ago when they first arrived on liquor store shelves here in Brandon. Since then, they have a decent selection of flavoured meads - including a prickly pear mead that was by far the star of the evening for everyone celebrating New Years Eve at Section 6 Brewing many months ago.

Today's sampling is their Lucky Lemonade, a Blackberry Lemonade Session Mead at 5% ABV
From the can: Our fan fav Good Omen made a second appearance with its pal, lemonade! This fruit forward lemonade is great for every season. Tart, fruity, with a dry finish - as always, we only use locally sourced MB honey, because supporting local businesses is cool.

Appearance: Cloudy with a yellowish pear body to it. Lotsa carbonation, both in the head at the beginning, as well as in the body. Pouring this mead reminds me of pouring a San Pellegrino Limonata - very fizzy and the head diminishes to near nothing at the end except a tiny amount of bubbles coming up from the mead.

Aroma: A heavy dose of lemon and honey. It's mildly sweet yet tart. The honey tingles the nostrils a tad but I'm not noticing any of the blackberry notes yet.

Taste: Here we go, there's the blackberry! Sweet, tart notes of blackberry right from the beginning. There's a moderate sweetness from the honey that gives it a bit of lemon soda thanks to the incredible carbonation in every sip. Lemony? For sure. This is definitely reminding me back Limonata, which I had exactly one time in my life, nineteen years ago at a nice terrace in Old Quebec City.

Overall Thoughts: I'm the kind of lemonade drinker that likes overly sweet - I've somehow never come off my childhood love of sweetness. That being said, this is a refreshing lemonade mead that reminds me of something I've only sampled once - it's crazy how something can invoke memories decades later at a whim. I'm not getting the blackberry in the aroma but it's definitely there in the taste. I'm used to every sweet alcoholic beverage being vodka based now days so my mind keeps going "where's that vodka bite?" only to be reminded.. oh yeah, this is a mead! It's great to see a patio-worthy beverage without vodka for once. Fairly sweet but not too sweet.
