Review: Devil May Care Beaglejuice West Coast Pilsner

Devil May Care Beaglejuice West Coast PilsnerBy the time this review is posted, it'll be too late for Halloween - this would've been perfect for Halloween but I wasn't thinking! Today's sampling is Beaglejuice West Coast Pilsner by Devil May Care Brewing in Winnipeg. This is (I believe) the second beer in a series raising funds for Veterinarians Without Borders, with their first edition being Tucky's Teefs Dark Lager last year. Colin & Christel at Devil May Care told me about Beaglejuice when I was in town a few months ago, well.. I'm excited! Prior to Tucky's Teefs I harassed them to do beers in the name of pets for yeaaaars!

From the can: It's showtime! At DMC, we've said that we do care about all creatures great and small - again we're teamed up with our friends and heroes from Veterinarians Without Borders for their Animals & Ales pet photos contest to raise money for animals in need. In 2026 a new winner has emerged: Oscar, a mischievous -- yet incredibly darling -- trouble-maker. And oh boy, does he know it. An incredibly reagle beagle. Always up to no good, but with a face that allows it - Oscar Turns on the Juice to See what Shakes Loose. This darling doggo is judging you... so open wide and drink up!

Appearance: Hazy with a deep golden straw appearance to it - it looks like a Hazy IPA to me so far, but I know it isn't. The head is moderately frothy with a deep snow white hue to it, and once the beer gets sampled there's a bit of a lacing on the glass.

Aroma: Notes of pine, a bit of a Citra aroma that gives off a leafiness to it, moderate grapefruit notes, lime, alfalfa, and a bit of lemon.

Taste: Taste-wise, this has notes reminiscent of a West Coast IPA (er IPL) but also gives off a Pilsner presence at the same time. There's a moderate pine, grapefruit and lemon presence right from the beginning. Following the West Coast vibe, it's ever so slightly crisp and Pilsnery but in reality - this tastes more bitter than many IPAs out there, but when I drank this out of a can, this tasted like a West Coast hopped Pilsner like it should be, while poured in a glass it tastes more mild mannered IPA.

Overall Thoughts: Prior to this review, I forgot that India Pale Lagers existed. Steve from DMC is probably cringing at this review (but he knows more than I ever will), but I haven't had such a floral/bitter/citrus-forward Lager or Pilsner in several years. I found it was more bitter-forward drinking it out of a glass, while it was somehow a bit more Pilsnery out of the can. I definitely don't know what I'm talking about so take that with a grain of salt. Well, should you try this beer? 10000000%! This is a delicious beer, and honestly likely worthy for a vacation or "I finally have a long weekend" showerbeer kind of beer, if you partake in that.. and if not, a lazy Sunday beer while you're chilling with your favourite pet, or after supporting Veterinarians Without Borders!
