Am I running out of ideas for BeerCrank.ca? Probably, but I like to revisit beers I raved about many years ago to see if they are as good as I remember. Today I'm revisiting Brasserie Nonsuch's Baltic Porter, an award winning Porter that was the first non-Belgian beer I ever sampled by the brewery and well enjoyed by yours truly. 6.5% ABVAppearance: Deep, dark, near black Porter with a good amount of tan-to-brownish head on top. The head diminishes pretty quickly just fizzing away but it does retain a small pool of bubbles on top of the beer.
Aroma: Rich, roasty, aromatic. There's a deep roasted malt aroma to the beer that gives it a slightly burnt coffee aroma to it, a bit of peat, dark chocolate and a slight caramel sweetness.
Taste: The very first thing I noticed was that it initially gives off almost a peanut butter stout flavour to it - a bit nutty. Once I get past that it has a very roasted presence that again, gives off a slight burnt coffee flavour, a bit of peat, caramel and a slight woody taste at the end. The aftertaste is decently bitter giving off a bit of the peatiness that we saw in the taste.
Overall Thoughts: Comparing notes to the 2019 review and it looks a lot more like what I was expecting, it's very flavourful, a tad burnt (in a good sense) and roasted, slightly sweet, all in all a great Manitoba winter companion. It's a whole different beast compared to 2019 as this is more roasted and bitter than sweet with a cocoa and raisin presence to it. It appears they make a Bourbon Barrel aged version of this.. that would be nice to have.
This is also an award winner with it being considered the third best Baltic Porter in the world just this past spring, cool stuff.
PS: Nonsuch is now open seven days a week!
