Review: Off The Rail Raising Haze North Eastern IPA

It's always nice to do my first review of a brewery and today, it's my first time reviewing Vancouver's Off The Rail Brewing's beer with Raising Haze North Eastern IPA.

From the can: "Pale malt, oats & wheat give this Northeast style a lovely hazy appearance. Full flavoured, fruit forward & juicy best describe this new addition to our IPA line up."

Appearance: Quite hazy with a moderately orange juice-like appearance to it, not as thick as orange juice but more reminiscent to some hefeweizen/witbiers I've had. The head is about two fingers worth of head that gradually diminishes to leave behind a light amount of lacing on the side of the glass.

Aroma: Fairly sweet and juicy with notes of orange, pineapple and lime. There's a bit of a leafy hop presence popping out in here, and a light cerealy profile to it as well. Slight amount of soapiness at the very end.

Taste: Quite a bit more bitter and less tropical than I expected from what I saw smelled in the aroma. It's definitely leafier than the aroma, but also has a light-to-mild amount of pine bitterness to it as well. A tad acidic on the tongue, quite dry and the dominating fruit note I'm getting is probably lemon or lime, while the orange and pineapple are pretty much subdued in this beer. The malt is a bit grainy/cerealy as well, but that's about it.

Overall Thoughts: It's alright but I was hoping for more of the juiciness to really pop up in my taste buds but it's more bitter than sweet here. Would I drink this again? Probably. You can find this at the Quality Inn Beer Store in Winnipeg. The only other beer I've ever tried from Off The Rail so far was their Raj Mahal IPA, which was pretty interesting and something different from an IPA but not something I'd drink more than one at a time. 6.5% ABV
