Review: Blood Brothers Guilty Remnant White Stout w/ Coffee, Vanilla & Lactose

Blood Brothers Guilty Remnant White Stout w/ Coffee, Vanilla & LactoseToday's sampling is right out of the GTA - Blood Brothers Brewing's Guilty Remnant White Stout with Coffee, Vanilla and Lactose. As the label states.. It won't be long now..

From the website: This "white chocolate white stout” is brewed with all of the elements of a traditional stout without any roasted malts. Instead, we infuse this decadent, full-bodied ale with vanilla, locally roasted coffee and cocoa tea to provide delightful aromas of coffee and white chocolate. Contains lactose. 6.0% ABV

Appearance: I picked this up at an LCBO right near the hotel I was staying at so this may not be the freshest - It's got a deep, golden body, opaque with a bit of floaty bits going on every where. Moderate amount of snow white head on top - it diminishes pretty much immediately with no trace of bubbles anywhere.

Aroma: White Stouts are a mind-eff - I get a very aromatic, rich roasted coffee presence to it with a sweet, delicate vanilla and milky presence to it. It's a tad nutty but pretty much mildly burnt coffee with vanilla and cream to it.

Taste: There's a slight burnt coffee taste to it, reminiscent of your small town coffee shop where the coffee has been sitting in the glass carafe for an indeterminant amount of time, but then you're like me - add a bunch of fancy flavour creams to make it bearable - in this case, something vanilla-y. For me, this white stout reminds me of my university's coffee shop (formerly Robin's Donuts) Vanilla Latte, sweet, creamy, roasted, burnt and a couple too many shots of vanilla.

There's a bit of a booziness that tingles me as I haven't eaten anything today but this is pretty much the best coffee-like beverage I can think of, I'd like to have some Bailey's with some of my expensive beans that my expensive Breville coffee maker can deal with it itself, but that's too much work for me right now and I don't have good luck with creamy boozy liqueurs.

Overall Thoughts: Rich roasted coffee notes with a lot of sugariness and vanilla presence to it - brings me back memories of when Brandon University had a Robin's Donuts location right next to SUDS.. a university pub that was once regarded by Rick Mercer as the second best university pub in all of Canada after Le Pub Universitaire at Université Laval in Quebec City - Le Pub definitely deserved the trophy back then, one summer regularly visiting Le Pub helped me turn into the beer geek I am now! This beer screws with your mind, indefinitely!
