My top 10 Canadian beers

I saw this article on AskMen.com discussing what they believe are the top 10 beers in Canada. The article is 3 years old, but even for being an old article, it's very flawed. They mainly only list beers from the largest breweries in Canada.

This is what THEY considered the top TEN beers in Canada:
  1. Labatt Blue - Are you KIDDING me?
  2. Molson Canadian - Blech
  3. Molson Export - Well, I do miss Export, so I understand.
  4. Moosehead
  5. Alexander Keiths India Pale Ale - It's not an IPA at all
  6. Sleeman Honey Brown
  7. Unibroue La Fin du Monde - that's the only beer that deserves to be on the list at all.
  8. Kokanee
  9. Molson Dry - It's a low quality discount beer here in Manitoba
  10. Labatt 50
So, as you can see - the list is very much flawed. Here's what I consider my top 10 Canadian beer list, it likely misses your personal favourites, but I tried to include as much variety as possible.
If the list were up to me, this would be my top 10 list, not in any particular order though:
  1. Unibroue La fin du monde (Edit: Maybe Unibroue's La Terrible may be worthy of #1!)
  2. Garrison Imperial India Pale Ale
  3. Half Pints' Stir Stick Stout
  4. Dieu du ciel péché mortel
  5. Paddock Wood Barrel Full of Monkeys
  6. St Ambroise Apricot Wheat Ale (if you like fruity beer)
  7. Muskoka Double Chocolate Cranberry Stout (perfect for a Christmas dessert treat)
  8. Red Racer India Pale Ale
  9. Mill St Barley Wine (Seasonal, not sure if they still make it anymore they do)
  10. Great Lakes 666 Devil's Pale Ale
Most of these beers are way too strong for the average beer drinker, I recommend starting with a local microbrew's pale ale and after drinking a few, start trying out the stronger beers. I hope you are able to become a beer connoisseur as much as I am, it doesn't take that much to become one!

Here is what you consider your top 10 Canadian beers of all time:
Club - anonymous - Ha ha, very funny!

10) Grand River Mill Race Mild
9) Mill Street Tank house
8) Unibroue Trois Pistoles
7) Unibroue La Fin Du Monde
6) St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout
5) Simple Malt Impériale Stout
4) Flying Monkeys Smash bomb atomic strong IPA
3) Dieu Du Ciel Peche Mortel
2) Les Trois Mousquetaires G.C. Porter Baltique
1) Dieu Du Ciel Rigor Mortis - ZenWolf

Beau's Winter Brewed - a great coffee flavoured seasonal
Dennisons Weissbier - I like the dark ones but the wheat and citrus tones here are really nice
Black Oak Summer Saison - European farm ale made in Ontario
Dieu du Ciel Peche Mortel - a big dense roasted stout. What non-beer-drinkers think Guinness is.
Grand River Mill Race Mild - the best "light" beer I've ever had
Mill Street Coffee Porter - was a nice and unexpected surprise
St. Ambroise Vintage Ale - great winter treat
Trois Mousquetaires - um, all of them? The Baltic Porter is great
And finally the Unibroues - Trois Pistoles, La Fin du Monde -

10) Molson Pilsner (when you need to get the job done, or show your rider pride)
9) Newcastle Brown Ale (mainstay at the pub)
8) Okanagan Black
7) Great Western Brewhouse Pilsner (Smart choice for the budget conscious University student) - I'm cringing but I drank crates of that back in university
6) Great Western Premium - No premium beer can be good
5) Maguire's Erin's Pale Ale (Local micro brew in Saskatoon)
4) Murphy's Irish Stout
3) Rickard's Dark
2) Paddock Wood Black Cat - The only one on the list I agree with but hey, everyone's beer tastes differ!
1) Sleeman's Honey Brown - Anonymous

What about Club?

I drank my first Blue in over a year yesterday (due to lack of options). I can't believe I used to drink that crap.

I'd definitely put Half Pints Little Scrapper IPA on the top 10 list.

I didn't want to be overly biased towards Half Pints, thats why I tried to keep it at one beer per brewery. Little Scrapper is damned delicious. I could live off that for the rest of my life and not get bored

Where do you even get Dieu du ciel around here?

We can't, yet. You may be able to do a custom order via MLCC, I know people who are currently ordering St Ambroise through LC, but it's like $3.80/bottle, pricey. You can try, but there's a minimum order (24 bottles I believe) if they even consider it.

I live in Ontario, but I think I could do a list of just Quebec beers. Sadly we don't get enough of the BC craft beers. My list would include...

I know this is an old post, but it sparked my interest. I'm a Saskatoon boy, and we drink our fair share of beer. This might be a biased list to Local brews, but through my travels I've expanded my beer portfolio.

10) Molson Pilsner (when you need to get the job done, or show your rider pride)
9) Newcastle Brown Ale (mainstay at the pub)

I am SO GLAD you made this article. I saw that same article and could not believe what a complete crock of crap it was! Canada has so many great beers, and most of the ones on that list are NOT them.

Thanks!
